Summary (Time, settings culture etc.)
“A View from the Bridge” is set in the 1950s in the Red Hook area of New York. The main characters in the play have a Sicilian-American culture. There is poverty in the area and many of the people are 1st or 2nd class immigrants therefore they still have many of the Sicilian cultures rather than the American ones.
The staging of the play: There is a simple set design and all we see is the interior of the living room of the flat. A desk is to represent Alfieri’s office. There is also a telephone booth to one side and ramps representing pavements. There are no scenery changes in the play. The author uses lighting to differentiate the different stage areas.
• “Forty – a husky, slightly overweight longshoreman.” • Protective, obsessive of Catherine • Hard working • Believes in the idea of Justice being about family loyalty • Family relationships are important to him, especially his relationship with Catherine.
Relationships at the start of the novel
Eddie & Beatrice • At the beginning of the novel their relationship is close, but the audience can see that Eddie is the dominant one in the relationship. Typical of a Sicilian attitude to marriage that the woman can have her say, but the man’s decision is final. • The audience can see that their relationship is close during the scene where they tell Catherine about the giant spider that Eddie once brought home by accident. Eddie and Beatrice are comfortable enough in each others company to allow for teasing and joking about.
Eddie & Catherine • At the beginning of the novel the relationship between Catherine and Eddie is very close, after all Eddie and Beatrice did bring up their orphaned niece as their own daughter. Catherine sees Eddie as her own father and seeks only his approval, Eddie is clearly very protective of Catherine, but at this point it appears to the audience to be purely in the paternal sense. • Eddie seems uneasy around Catherine when she is trying to impress him with her news, he also reacts badly to her clothes and is immediately disapproving of them.
Eddie & Rodolpho • Eddie, while at first seeming perfectly welcoming and hospitable to Rodolpho, soon grows to dislike him more and more due to Catherine’s reaction to Rodolpho. At first Eddie can conceal his contempt for him, but as Eddie is a man who is usually honest in displaying his emotions to others, this becomes more and more difficult for him. • He begins to ignore Rodolpho quite early into the first conversation with Marco and Rodolpho, putting him down about his singing.
Eddie & Marco • Eddie takes an instant liking to Marco, and pays more attention to him than Rodolpho in the initial conversation with them. He prefers him because he is a father like himself, and also because they come from the same manual working background.
His role is similar to a chorus in a Greek tragedy. As well as commenting on events, he forces the audience to consider wider themes that are being displayed in the scenes. He is a lawyer, middle aged in his fifties turning grey. He was 25 when he moved to America from Sicily. He is passionate about his job which his wife finds surprising as there is nothing glamorous about it. He deals with normal people who are just squabbling over petty things. Every now and then he has to deal with a case that ends in tragedy
He is also a character in his own right as he appears in some scenes with Eddie. His character is sympathetic. Despite the fact he is not directly involved with his cases he feels strongly about his clients and wants to do everything possible for them: “I was so powerless to stop it.” Here we see he actually cares about the lives of his client, he is a honest man who is confident and understanding. He highlights the similarities between him and Eddie. They are both family men and he lets Eddie know he understands how he feels. He is a man who deserves respect and is a likable character. His idea of justice is: “The law is only a word for what has the right to happen.” He treats Eddie in a compassionate way and is sympathetic towards his case. He gives Eddie counselling as well as legal advice. ”Let her go. That’s my advice. You did your job, now it’s her life; wish her luck, and let her go.” Alfieri is a character who tries to reason with his clients to show them what justice means in America. “Only God makes justice.” This is where Alfieri is trying to tell Marco to let it go as Marco cannot judge Eddie but he will ultimately be judged by God when he dies.
Alfieris closing speech: In this he is still considering what justice really means. He tells us this from his opening sentence. “Most of the time now we settle for half and I like it better.” Alfieri admires Eddie, he knows his actions were wrong and his death was useless but he admires Eddie’s real passion for justice, his faults were known by everyone. “I think I will love him more than all my sensible clients.” “And yet it is better to settle for half, it must be!” He is trying to convince himself, the exclamation mark shows that he is very emotional, trying to convince himself that his emotions about justice are right.
• He is single • He has blond hair and fair skin which is unusual for a Sicilian • Younger brother of Marco • Smaller build than that of his brother • He is confident, he is willing to sing in front of everyone he is very ambitious, plans for the future but he is immature in comparison to his brother he is more relaxed than Marco he has no responsibilities other than for himself • Clearly attractive as Catherine responds to his presence right away • Eddie grows to dislike him quickly [he is coming more and more to address Marco only] • Rodolpho finds Catherine attractive he would not have been so eager to sing if anyone else had asked him • He wants to achieve the American Dream as does his brother Marco • Pg 38-42: Rodolpho is seeking Eddie’s approval. “[attempting familiarity]” and “[He sees no response in Eddie’s face]”. Eddie completely blocks all attempts of Rodolpho’s to be friendly. • Pg 59-63: We learn more about his personality here. We find out how deeply he cares for Catherine. “My heart dies to look at you”… “All the answers are in my eyes, Catherine”. Rodolpho is practical; he will not go and live somewhere where he couldn’t look after Catherine, just to keep Eddie happy. Rodolpho is responsible; he will only make decisions that make things better for the time.
In the play, the character Eddie appears to be responsible for his own downfall.
• Eddie is unable to accept the relationship between Catherine and Rodolpho, he also is certain that Rodolpo is not a “proper” man and constantly criticises him and his actions. • Eddie makes two visits to Alfieri in the attempt to get legal action against Rodolpho as at this point he can not bare the same of calling immigration. • Eddie is the cause of his own loss of authority within his household. This is because he tries to restrict Catherine while Beatrice is telling her to become independent. When Eddie realises he has lost this authority he also realises that he has lost Catherine and it is too late to get her back. • The fact that Eddie had hidden feelings for Catherine and could not accept that she was with Rodolpho would also be seen as a major reason for Eddie’s own self destruction and downfall. He became desperate because of this and because Alfieri could not do anything for him he betrayed his own moral values and called the immigration officers. • The fact that Eddie does not understand his own emotions or the emotions of others and does things before giving them a second thought means that he is unable to predict how others will respond to him. This usually leads into him acting irrationally.
- Eddie is very protective of Catherine at the beginning of the play. He looks after her like a father would because her parents have died. - He feels that Catherine is too friendly as he says that she is "walkin' wavy" which upsets Catherine since she is a grown woman. - He refers to Catherine in the beginning as being "Madonna" refering to the virgin mary suggesting innocence and purity. - she does not understand Eddies concern because he has always kept her protected. *At the beginning we can see that Eddie is the dominant character in this relationship as Catherine is so naïve and constantly wants Eddie’s approval - He becomes easily jealous of the attraction between Catherine and Rodolpho. - Catherine is willing to give up her relationship with Rodolpho to ensure that Eddie doesn’t get hurt. - Catherine becomes irritated by Eddie's behaviour towards Rodolpho which causes her to challenge his authority. His behaviour is a result of jealousy, selfishness which suggests that he is stunted emotionally and childlike, his emotional needs must be met even if it interferes with the emotions of others. He is unable to understand how other people work, the more he picks on Rodolpho, the more Catherine will defend Rodolpho. - “[her sobs of pity and love for him break her composure]” – shows that Catherine has mixed feelings for Eddie. - In shock of seeing Rodolpho and Catherine coming out the bedroom together, his immediate reaction is to chuck Rodolpho out which provokes Catherine to leave as well. This is another indication of how he is unable to understand how other people work. He kisses Catherine when she asserts her independance. This is an act of desperation to show Catherine how he really feels about her. - "[He presses his fingers against his eyes]" - Eddie realising that he has lost authority over Catherine who once did everything she could to go by him. - “I’ll kill you!” – Catherine, evidence of how she has changed over the duration of the play and how she has grown up and became more of her own person, lost her innocence. - “He bites people when the sleep! He comes in when nobody’s lookin’ and poisons decent people. In the garbage he belongs.” – Catherine has no more compassion for Eddie, by using rat like qualities she suggests that Eddie has attacked Marco and Rodolpho when they were defenseless against immigration. - Catherine hates him towards the end as she calls him a "rat" and he becomes very violent "[Eddie seems about to pick up the table and fling it at her]" this shows his anger. Catherine acts like this because Eddie called immigration on Rodolpho and Marco.

Summary
(Time, settings culture etc.)
“A View from the Bridge” is set in the 1950s in the Red Hook area of New York. The main characters in the play have a Sicilian-American culture. There is poverty in the area and many of the people are 1st or 2nd class immigrants therefore they still have many of the Sicilian cultures rather than the American ones.
The staging of the play: There is a simple set design and all we see is the interior of the living room of the flat. A desk is to represent Alfieri’s office. There is also a telephone booth to one side and ramps representing pavements. There are no scenery changes in the play. The author uses lighting to differentiate the different stage areas.
Eddie Carbone
• “Forty – a husky, slightly overweight longshoreman.”
• Protective, obsessive of Catherine
• Hard working
• Believes in the idea of Justice being about family loyalty
• Family relationships are important to him, especially his relationship with Catherine.
Relationships at the start of the novel
Eddie & Beatrice
• At the beginning of the novel their relationship is close, but the audience can see that Eddie is the dominant one in the relationship. Typical of a Sicilian attitude to marriage that the woman can have her say, but the man’s decision is final.
• The audience can see that their relationship is close during the scene where they tell Catherine about the giant spider that Eddie once brought home by accident. Eddie and Beatrice are comfortable enough in each others company to allow for teasing and joking about.
Eddie & Catherine
• At the beginning of the novel the relationship between Catherine and Eddie is very close, after all Eddie and Beatrice did bring up their orphaned niece as their own daughter. Catherine sees Eddie as her own father and seeks only his approval, Eddie is clearly very protective of Catherine, but at this point it appears to the audience to be purely in the paternal sense.
• Eddie seems uneasy around Catherine when she is trying to impress him with her news, he also reacts badly to her clothes and is immediately disapproving of them.
Eddie & Rodolpho
• Eddie, while at first seeming perfectly welcoming and hospitable to Rodolpho, soon grows to dislike him more and more due to Catherine’s reaction to Rodolpho. At first Eddie can conceal his contempt for him, but as Eddie is a man who is usually honest in displaying his emotions to others, this becomes more and more difficult for him.
• He begins to ignore Rodolpho quite early into the first conversation with Marco and Rodolpho, putting him down about his singing.
Eddie & Marco
• Eddie takes an instant liking to Marco, and pays more attention to him than Rodolpho in the initial conversation with them. He prefers him because he is a father like himself, and also because they come from the same manual working background.
Hazel and Margaret
Alfieri
His role is similar to a chorus in a Greek tragedy. As well as commenting on events, he forces the audience to consider wider themes that are being displayed in the scenes. He is a lawyer, middle aged in his fifties turning grey. He was 25 when he moved to America from Sicily. He is passionate about his job which his wife finds surprising as there is nothing glamorous about it. He deals with normal people who are just squabbling over petty things. Every now and then he has to deal with a case that ends in tragedy
He is also a character in his own right as he appears in some scenes with Eddie. His character is sympathetic. Despite the fact he is not directly involved with his cases he feels strongly about his clients and wants to do everything possible for them: “I was so powerless to stop it.” Here we see he actually cares about the lives of his client, he is a honest man who is confident and understanding. He highlights the similarities between him and Eddie. They are both family men and he lets Eddie know he understands how he feels. He is a man who deserves respect and is a likable character.
His idea of justice is: “The law is only a word for what has the right to happen.”
He treats Eddie in a compassionate way and is sympathetic towards his case. He gives Eddie counselling as well as legal advice. ”Let her go. That’s my advice. You did your job, now it’s her life; wish her luck, and let her go.”
Alfieri is a character who tries to reason with his clients to show them what justice means in America. “Only God makes justice.” This is where Alfieri is trying to tell Marco to let it go as Marco cannot judge Eddie but he will ultimately be judged by God when he dies.
Alfieris closing speech: In this he is still considering what justice really means. He tells us this from his opening sentence. “Most of the time now we settle for half and I like it better.” Alfieri admires Eddie, he knows his actions were wrong and his death was useless but he admires Eddie’s real passion for justice, his faults were known by everyone. “I think I will love him more than all my sensible clients.”
“And yet it is better to settle for half, it must be!” He is trying to convince himself, the exclamation mark shows that he is very emotional, trying to convince himself that his emotions about justice are right.

Rodolpho
• He is single
• He has blond hair and fair skin which is unusual for a Sicilian
• Younger brother of Marco
• Smaller build than that of his brother
• He is confident, he is willing to sing in front of everyone he is very ambitious, plans for the future but he is immature in comparison to his brother he is more relaxed than Marco he has no responsibilities other than for himself
• Clearly attractive as Catherine responds to his presence right away
• Eddie grows to dislike him quickly [he is coming more and more to address Marco only]
• Rodolpho finds Catherine attractive he would not have been so eager to sing if anyone else had asked him
• He wants to achieve the American Dream as does his brother Marco
• Pg 38-42: Rodolpho is seeking Eddie’s approval. “[attempting familiarity]” and “[He sees no response in Eddie’s face]”. Eddie completely blocks all attempts of Rodolpho’s to be friendly.
• Pg 59-63: We learn more about his personality here. We find out how deeply he cares for Catherine. “My heart dies to look at you”… “All the answers are in my eyes, Catherine”. Rodolpho is practical; he will not go and live somewhere where he couldn’t look after Catherine, just to keep Eddie happy. Rodolpho is responsible; he will only make decisions that make things better for the time.
Megan and Mathew
Eddie
In the play, the character Eddie appears to be responsible for his own downfall.
• Eddie is unable to accept the relationship between Catherine and Rodolpho, he also is certain that Rodolpo is not a “proper” man and constantly criticises him and his actions.
• Eddie makes two visits to Alfieri in the attempt to get legal action against Rodolpho as at this point he can not bare the same of calling immigration.
• Eddie is the cause of his own loss of authority within his household. This is because he tries to restrict Catherine while Beatrice is telling her to become independent. When Eddie realises he has lost this authority he also realises that he has lost Catherine and it is too late to get her back.
• The fact that Eddie had hidden feelings for Catherine and could not accept that she was with Rodolpho would also be seen as a major reason for Eddie’s own self destruction and downfall. He became desperate because of this and because Alfieri could not do anything for him he betrayed his own moral values and called the immigration officers.
• The fact that Eddie does not understand his own emotions or the emotions of others and does things before giving them a second thought means that he is unable to predict how others will respond to him. This usually leads into him acting irrationally.

- Eddie is very protective of Catherine at the beginning of the play. He looks after her like a father would because her parents have died.
- He feels that Catherine is too friendly as he says that she is "walkin' wavy" which upsets Catherine since she is a grown woman.
- He refers to Catherine in the beginning as being "Madonna" refering to the virgin mary suggesting innocence and purity.
- she does not understand Eddies concern because he has always kept her protected.
*At the beginning we can see that Eddie is the dominant character in this relationship as Catherine is so naïve and constantly wants Eddie’s approval
- He becomes easily jealous of the attraction between Catherine and Rodolpho.
- Catherine is willing to give up her relationship with Rodolpho to ensure that Eddie doesn’t get hurt.
- Catherine becomes irritated by Eddie's behaviour towards Rodolpho which causes her to challenge his authority. His behaviour is a result of jealousy, selfishness which suggests that he is stunted emotionally and childlike, his emotional needs must be met even if it interferes with the emotions of others. He is unable to understand how other people work, the more he picks on Rodolpho, the more Catherine will defend Rodolpho.
- “[her sobs of pity and love for him break her composure]” – shows that Catherine has mixed feelings for Eddie.
- In shock of seeing Rodolpho and Catherine coming out the bedroom together, his immediate reaction is to chuck Rodolpho out which provokes Catherine to leave as well. This is another indication of how he is unable to understand how other people work. He kisses Catherine when she asserts her independance. This is an act of desperation to show Catherine how he really feels about her.
- "[He presses his fingers against his eyes]" - Eddie realising that he has lost authority over Catherine who once did everything she could to go by him.
- “I’ll kill you!” – Catherine, evidence of how she has changed over the duration of the play and how she has grown up and became more of her own person, lost her innocence.
- “He bites people when the sleep! He comes in when nobody’s lookin’ and poisons decent people. In the garbage he belongs.” – Catherine has no more compassion for Eddie, by using rat like qualities she suggests that Eddie has attacked Marco and Rodolpho when they were defenseless against immigration.
- Catherine hates him towards the end as she calls him a "rat" and he becomes very violent "[Eddie seems about to pick up the table and fling it at her]" this shows his anger. Catherine acts like this because Eddie called immigration on Rodolpho and Marco.
