Verse 2 of Assisi is where the priest explains the meaning of the frescos to the tourists.

The priest uses the word "clever" to explain the Giotto’s work. By doing this he is being patronising towards Giotto. The priest thinks he is superior to Giotto, clever is a word you may use to describe a child’s art not Renaissance painter! The writer’s attitude towards the priest is dislike. 'Clever' shows this as it shows how the poet thinks the priest is to smart for his own good.

The priest enjoys showing the frescos to the tourists but this is contrary to the message of St Francis.

There is a contrast between the priest's intellectual understandings and his actions. Even with his intellectual Christian teachings he still does nothing to help the beggar. This behaviour is ironic.

The defiant tone in lines 15-17 is directed towards the priest.

The cleverness at the end of the verse has two meanings. To show the poets appreciation of Giotto’s talent but it also suggests his disapproval of the priest's attitude. He sees him as a man who is too smart for his own good.

The full stop in the middle of line 15 is a caesura, which is used to add impact to the poet's evaluation of the priest.

Verse 1.
This verse shows the description of the beggar. The physical appearance of the beggar is described as having a hunched back, twisted limbs, being unusually short and being quite badly deformed. The words used to describe him are very blunt, graphic and brutal words.

"hands on backwards" - line 1
This gives the reader an unusual and very visual image

"sat slumped like a half filled sack" - line 2
The letter "s" is alliterated in these lines. This sound is associated with the idea of deflation or air escaping, it is the sound of something incomplete.
There is also a simile in this line where the beggar is being compared to a half filled sack. This is effective as they are both lopsided and unstable. The effect here is that the sack is an inanimate obect, dehumanising the beggar.

"tiny twisted legs from which sawdust might run" - line 3/4
alliteration is used here and reinforces the idea of the dehumanising of the beggar because the sound would be like taping on wood. The idea that sawdust may run from his legs makes them dound wooden and useless.

In this first verse our feelings towards the beggar are sympathy, pity, but also disgust and anger.
If in the shoes of somebody of the beggar's position, we would feel hurt and angry at these harsh descriptive images of the beggar. Since the poem was written 30 years ago, the situation of the treatment of the disabled has changed and they are treated with much more respect these days.

tone - the tone of these lines is sarcastic. This develops the tone in these lines and suggests the poets anger towards the situation.

irony - "outside the three tiers of churches" line 5
The fact that St. Francis who loved and cared for the poor is honoured by an elaborate and costly church. The chursh which has been built in his honour is contrary to what he believed and preached.
The church is better cared for than the man who is in need of helpo from the church.

Juxtaposition - The grotesquely disabled beggar is placed outside the architecturally elaborate and beautiful church.
The juxtaposition emphasises that the man made object is more cared for and looked after.

contrasts - lines 1-4 gives us a graphic detailed description of the beggars appearance, contrasting with the description of the church.
The man made object being contrasted with the beggar which God has created.

The tourists were more concentrated and excited about seeing the frescoes and the church rather than helping the beggar. They were listening intently to the priest, they ignore him and walk right past him, even just after seeing the frescoes. Clearly they did not learn anything from them.

There is juxtaposition in line 20. This places the beggar and the tourists next to each other. This conveys the contrast explained in Verse 2. It shows them ignoring the beggar and following the priest, with no time for the beggar.

The author looks down on the tourists with disgust and anger. He compares them to chickens, by using words like: clucking, fluttered and scattered to explain their actions. This comparison to a stupid bird would be insulting.

Alliteration of “Clucking Contentedly” the C sound mimics the sound of the chickens, bringing the tourists to life. This continues this idea of the poet’s contempt towards the tourists.

We see a contrast here, between the wealth of the tourists and the poverty the beggar faces. Also the physical and health differences reinforce this contrast.

“It was they who” this is Syntax. This places emphasis on ‘they’ and shows the poet scrutinising the tourist’s behaviour.

The description of the beggar still remains as brutal and blunt as it was in the first verse. This tone is achieved by listing all the faults of the beggar one after the other, providing fairly grotesque imagery in a list, forming a disgusting image piece by piece. Repetition of ‘whose’ emphasises each repulsive point of the beggar, rather than a simple list.

The poet uses female personal pronouns to suggest that the beggar has retained innocence [ Line 25 ] that other adults have lost. As we see in the priest and tourists. The birds continue the idea of purity that is shown when the beggar is described as a child. This shows that the beggar is somehow more deserving of God than the priest and tourists.

Understanding of the poem

The poet is on a tour visiting the frescoes at the basilica of St Francis in Assisi. He sees a dwarf who’s begging outside the church the dwarf is ignored by the tourists and the priest.

Themes

• Poverty
• Disability
• Societies attitudes towards these issues

Personal Response

Throughout the poem the writer creates a contrast between the priest’s beliefs and actions to help with the readers understanding of the main themes.
The priest and tourists reactions to the message in the frescoes also help point out that society’s attitude towards the disabled is that of little care and neglect.
In our opinion the writers use of imagery helps us as the reader to visualise the beggar and feel pity towards him. His word choice throughout also creates a good understanding of the message of the frescoes and shows us how the priest values the material things in life (the church) instead of helping the needy beggar.
